The Blues boss had doubts over whether the German was cut out for his side. With Mason Mount ticking along nicely, he felt the 21-year-old wasn’t an essential signing.

Statistically, he’s been backed up. Havertz has scored just one Premier League goal while registering only three assists, a meagre return for a £72million player.

But Abramovich wanted him. Badly.

Therefore, the Shevchenko comparisons are justified. Lampard, like Mourinho, has paid the price for being unable to produce magic from a player he never even wanted in the first place.
