Colombian football team's president shot dead next to his daughter in drive-by killing

The president of a Colombian football team has been killed after he was shot dead in a drive-by shooting, second division club Tigres FC have announced. Edgar Paez was driving in a car with his daughter close to the club’s Techo stadium, following their 3-2 defeat to Atletico Cali on Saturday, when two unnamed men drove up beside them and shot him dead.

Mr Paez was returning home by car with his daughter after the game in Bogota when he was killed by two men on a motorbike close to the stadium, according to reports in the local media, via Reuters.

Police revealed he was shot three times in the skull, thorax and neck, and the 63-year-old was transported to the Mederi Clinic before he was later pronounced dead. However, his daughter managed to escape unharmed from the vehicle.

No arrests have been made, but authorities have launched an investigation into the events that led to the killing.

It is the latest football-related killing in the Latin American nation, with violence commonplace in Colombian football.

His club Tigres confirmed the death of their president in a heartfelt statement released on their social media account on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“The Tigres family and the sporting community are devastated by this event,” the club said in a statement. “His commitment to the team and his dedication to the development of the sport in our region left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.”

Fernando Jaramillo, president of the Major Division of Colombian Professional Football (DIMAYOR) which runs the professional leagues, paid tribute to Paez in mourning his passing.

“He was always distinguished by his respect for his friends, by his strong but respectful positions and by the love he professed for the sport that we are all passionate about: football,” Jaramillo said.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Colombian Football Federation (FCF) sent their condolences to the family of Mr Paez.

It read: “The Colombian Football Federation and its Executive Committee regret the death of Mr. Édgar Paez, president of the Tigres FC Club. From Colombian football we express our condolences and accompany family, friends and relatives in their pain. RIP.”

A minute’s silence will be held in the next two rounds of Colombian league matches as a memorial to Paez.
