A state trooper narrowly avoided being hit by lightning after dashcam footage shows it struck just yards from where he was helping a motorist.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol shared a clip of the incident online last Friday, saying: ‘Woah! That was close!’

The trooper had stopped to help a motorist during a storm last Thursday on the Turner Turnpike when he came ‘awfully close’ to being hit, they said.

He is not thought to have been injured in the incident.

‘This lightning strike came awfully close to our trooper yesterday when he stopped to assist with some equipment that had fallen off a trailer on the Turner Turnpike between Bristow and Stroud’, the highway patrol added.

The footage begins with the state trooper walking towards his patrol vehicle in the rain.

Moments later a huge bolt of lightening appears to strike the highway right next to him. He jumps as he continues to walk back to his car.

The lightning appears to rock the car in front of him.

A video of the incident has since been shared more than 3,500 times with viewers commenting on how lucky the trooper was.

One viewer, Brett Gilbert, commented: ‘OMG so thankful the Trooper is safe!’

Donna Sears Dougherty added: ‘Made my armhairs stand up! Glad everyone is safe! Too close!’

The CDC say the odds of being hit by lightning are around 1 in 500,000.
