His beginnings in film composition were as early as 1954, when he worked as a ghostwriter, before he made his film writing debut in 1961 with  Luciano Salce’s Il Federale (The Fascist).

He continued to collaborate with Salce for many years, while also being part of “The Group” (Gruppo di Improvvisazione di Nuova Consonanza), a group of avant-garde composers.

Morricone’s best-known compositions are for his work on The Dollars trilogy from Sergio Leone, which included A Fistful of Dollars, For A Few Dollars More and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

While these are his best-known works, along with Once Upon a Time in the West and a host of music on Westerns made by Sergio Corbucci, he also worked on La Cage aux Folles and The Bird with the Crystal Plummage, operating in comedy and horror genres.
