German far-right political party leader 'attacked with syringe' at rally

A leader of a far-right German political party has been taken to hospital following a “violent incident” reportedly involving a syringe.

One political commentator has dubbed the incident as an “assasination attempt”. Tino Chrupalla, one of two leaders of the far-right Alternative for Germany party, was due to speak at an election rally in Bavaria on Wednesday.

But the German news agency dpa says an incident took place in Ingolstadt. Few details are released about the exact nature of the incident.

According to the political party, the incident took place in a crowd just before Chrupalla was due to speak.

A police statement said Chrupalla was given medical treatment at about 4.30pm before being taken to hospital. Officers said “an obvious injury was not apparent at that time”.

Officers say they are investigating to determine “the precise circumstances of this medical incident”. Officers urged anyone with photos and videos to get in touch with officers.

Chrupalla has been one of the two leaders of the party since 2019. The 48-year-old shares the job with Alice Weidel.

Founded in 2013, Alternative for Germany, known by the acronym AfD, has a focus on eurozone rescue packages. It gained prominence in 2015 due to numbers of refugees and migrants before winning its first parliamentary seat in 2017,

It recently polled around 20% support, placing it in second place. That was a considerable rise from thye 10.3% it won at the last federal election in 2021.

Dutch political commentator Eva Vlaardingerbroek raised concerns about the attack. She said: “Tino Chrupalla, the co-chairman of ‘Alternative for Germany’ (the only ‘true’ right-wing party in Germany), has been hospitalized after an assassination attempt with a syringe before he was due to speak at an election rally in Bavaria.

“We have to realize how serious the situation is for us on the right in Western Europe. We’re dealing with an enemy that wants to and is prepared to kill us for our political beliefs.”
