GMB: Meghan Markle and Harry slammed by Humphrys

The veteran BBC star will host his final episodes of Mastermind and Celebrity Mastermind in the coming weeks. Humphrys will appear seven more times before being replaced by BBC News anchor Clive Myrie. The 77-year-old will bow out after 18 years at the helm of the popular quiz show and will likely be missed by many.

Humphrys has savoured an impressive career at the BBC, having presented Radio 4’s Today show, BBC News, the Nine O’Clock News and more.

During his 55-year tenure at the corporation, politicians quaked with fear during interviews and his fiery reputation even permeated to the Royal Family.

On three occasions, Queen Elizabeth II refused his interview requests, Prince Philip swore at him multiple times and other royals have been the victims of his verbal lashings.

Prince Harry and Meghan have been two of his most recent targets and often used as a way to promote his anti-monarchy views.

Since the Sussexes announced their departure from the Royal Family last year, Humphrys’ rants against the couple have increased.

In a column for YouGov last year, the journalist claimed Meghan must have been “misinformed” about what life inside the Firm was like.

He wrote: “It was supposed… Meghan fancied a bit of hand-shaking too – why else would she join since that’s what they ‘do’?”

The firebrand presenter took aim at Harry too who he accused of wanting to “slope off to a life easier on the hands” in the US.

After the Sussexes’ tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey, Humphrys was fired-up and ready to unleash a new round of rants against the couple.

He argued it was “a mistake for someone as sensitive” as Meghan to “expose” herself to royal life.

Humphrys also took aim at the Duchess’ claim that there were several “concerns and conversations” about “how dark” their son Archie’s skin “might be”.

The bombshell allegation emerged during the Oprah interview and red-faced Harry stated: “That conversation, I am never going to share.”

Later, following the broadcast of their tell-all, Harry clarified the unnamed royal was neither the Queen or Prince Philip.

Her Majesty responded to the claims in a statement where she said the issues would be “addressed by the family privately”.

However, she cautioned their words with the remark: “Some recollections may vary.”

Claims of racism within the Royal Family have caused untold damage to the Firm and led some to call for the monarchy to be abolished altogether.

The Daily Mirror claimed Meghan and Harry’s remarks risked the “worst royal crisis in 85 years” – in reference to the growing anger from the public.

And Humphrys appeared to defend the Duke and Duchess’ claims of racism.

In a February column for the Daily Mail, he described their 2017 engagement as “one of the best things that could have happened to the Royal Family”.

But he ended the sentence with the words: “Most of us thought.”

He wrote: “True, there were one or two cretins out there who disapproved of such a senior member of the Royal Family marrying someone of mixed race.

“But they were squashed flat by the overwhelming majority who approved, weren’t they?”

Humphrys believed the royals “were very impressed” with “how keen” Meghan appeared to want to “get stuck into royal life, with all the duties it entailed”.

He then vented: “What part of that word ‘duties’ did you not understand, Meghan?”

Previously, Humphrys claimed Meghan “thought she could become a Duchess and an HRH without having to put on the white gloves”.

He also called out the “teeniest contradiction” with what the Sussexes said compared with their actions.

Humphrys noted they asked for “privacy” while simultaneously having photographs taken of them laying wreaths for Remembrance Sunday.

He also pointed out their interview with Oprah, who he described as “the most famous TV celebrity on the planet”, would be watched by millions.

According to CBS, who first broadcast the interview, Oprah With Meghan And Harry was watched by more than 49 million people worldwide.

John Humphrys stars in Mastermind, which airs at 8pm Monday on BBC Two.
