Joel Matip is expected to return for Liverpool when Burnley visit Anfield. The Clarets will be looking to frustrate the hosts, who have failed to score in their past three Premier League games against Newcastle, Southampton and Manchester United.

The Reds have been lacking fluidity in attack but will be keen to find their mojo against Sean Dyche’s organised Burnley outfit.

Liverpool were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw with the Clarets last season after lockdown but now are keen to get back to winning ways under the lights on home soil.

Matip is expected to return to the starting XI, following a lay-off with an adductor problem.

The fitness of the centre-back will now prove key to Liverpool’s title challenge with the Reds unlikely to sign a defender this month.

“So, first and foremost, Joel is in full training,” Klopp said ahead of the meeting with Burnley.

“Now we have to make a decision and we will see how that will be until tomorrow. Yesterday he trained completely normal.

“Diogo is still a few weeks away, I don’t know exactly how long but it will not be in the next one or two weeks. He needs time, the injury needs time.”

Liverpool are expected to stick with their favoured 4-3-3 system, with Burnley expected to defend deep.

There has been talk that Thiago could be pushed further forward, with Henderson dropping in as the No 6.

The Spaniard showed his quality in the 0-0 draw with United and there was a tendency to venture forward in a bid to create something in the final third.

Henderson’s discipline may be required in front of the back four, particularly with Matip lacking match fitness.

The clash could come too soon for Naby Keita though, who has been missing for several weeks and yet to step up his recovery in training.

Expected Liverpool XI vs Burnley (4-3-3): Alisson; Trent Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Fabinho, Robertson; Henderson, Thiago, Wijnaldum; Salah, Mane Firmino.
