Manchester United survived a late penalty scare to secure their first Champions League victory of the season on Tuesday night as they overcame Copenhagen 1-0 at Old Trafford courtesy of a header from Harry Maguire. The Red Devils dominated the match but were guilty of profligacy in front of goal as a series of chances went begging. Erik ten Hag’s side thought they had blown their opportunity to seal the win when Scott McTominay conceded a penalty in stoppage time at the end of the match – but under-fire goalkeeper Andre Onana palmed away Jordan Larsson’s spot kick.
There were a few eyebrows raised before Larsson took his penalty as United winger Alejandro Garnacho was spotted scuffing up the penalty spot. And Red Devils boss Ten Hag has now broken his silence on the incident.
If Onana needed to produce a spectacular moment to kick-start his United career, he couldn’t have asked for more fortune on the night. And his under-pressure team-mate Maguire also enjoyed a stellar evening as he took advantage of his first Champions League start of the campaign to pop up with the winner before showing his class by dedicating the victory to Red Devils hero Sir Bobby Charlton, who passed away at the weekend at the age of 86.
United are now just one point behind second-place Galatasaray in Group A of the Champions League and will be looking to pick up the points they need to seal their place in the knockout stages of the competition.
Express Sport will have plenty of United news throughout the day off the back of their latest victory. The club’s takeover is also continuing to dominate headlines, while the transfer gossip is heating up ahead of the January transfer window.
