Vladimir Putin is preparing a “massive” retaliatory nuclear strike to wipe out Russia’s enemies in the event of a rival nuclear attack, according to his own defense ministry.
The Kremlin has said Russia’s Strategic Deterrence Forces conducted exercises under the leadership of the 71-year-old president, according to Russian state-owned news outlet RIA Novosti.
Putin reportedly first heard reports on the nuclear weapons exercises from Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov.
He is quoted as saying: “Let’s get to work. Please, the floor to Sergei Shoigu.”
Shoigu said the “tasks of delivering a massive nuclear strike by strategic offensive forces in response to an enemy nuclear attack are being worked out”, according to the publication.

Head of the General Staff Gerasimov is reported to have announced the procedure for holding the event.
He is alleged to have noted the “Yars mobile ground-based strategic missile system of the Strategic Missile Forces, the Tula strategic missile submarine of the Northern Fleet, as well as two Tu-95MS long-range strategic missile carriers, were involved in the exercises.”
The Kremlin said launches of ballistic and cruise missiles took place during the exercises, according to RIA Novosti.
The report said the Yars intercontinental ballistic missile was launched from the “Plesetsk cosmodrome” at the Kura test site in Kamchatka.
It added the Sineva ballistic missile was launched from the Tula strategic nuclear missile submarine from the Barents Sea, while the Tu-95MS long-range aircraft also launched air-launched missiles.
During the training, “the level of training of military command and control bodies, the skills of the leadership, as well as the operational staff in organizing the management of subordinate troops” were also checked.
The Kremlin said that following the training exercises, all of the planned tasks had been successfully completed in full.
The nuclear drills come after Lt Col Stuart Crawford, a former British Army officer, author and broadcaster, warned any nuke move by Putin will bring down the terrible wrath of both NATO and the US.
