Russian oil baron who opposed invasion of Ukraine 'dies suddenly' year after colleague

Russian oil baron Vladimir Nekrasov has died suddenly, just over a year since a fellow Lukoil company boss died after falling from a hospital window.

Nekrasov, 66, died of ‘acute heart failure’ according to a statement from Russia’s Lukoil LKOH.MM.

He was the chairman of Lukoil, a company that took an unusual public stand against Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine.

The company stated that Nekrasov had worked in the oil and gas sector for almost 50 years but did not comment further on the circumstances around his death.

The previous chairman of Lukoil, Ravil Maganov, died in September 2022.

Maganov’s death had been met with suspicion though officially he was battling a long-term heart condition when he fell from a sixth-floor window.

Nekrasov was vice-president of Lukoil had the time at took over the chairmanship following the death of Maganov.

He was later awarded the Order of Merit for the Fatherland by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
