Line of Duty fans are desperate to find out whether DS Kate Fleming (played by Vicky McClure) was killed by PC Ryan Pilkington (Gregory Piper). The two characters were seen in a shootout at the end of episode five and when television screens up and down the nation went black, two gunshots were fired and no one knows which gun they came from or who the bullets hit. Ahead of the penultimate instalment of the gripping crime-drama, the BBC has released two images from filming which hint at what is going to happen next. And it seems, judging by the look on DI Steve Arnott’s (Martin Compston) face, what he is about to find could change his life and the work he has carried out for the last 10 years, forever.

The first image shows Steve accompanied by DC Chloe Bishop (Shalom Brune-Franklin) and DCS Patricia Carmichael (Anna Maxwell Martin) walking towards something in the lorry car park – the last known location of their AC-12 colleague Kate.

All three police officers look worried and it isn’t long before backup arrives in the form of Superintendent Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar).

The second image shows Ted staying back while an anguished Steve puts blue rubber gloves on and picks up the pace towards whatever is in front of him.

Could it be Kate, lying on the floor and bleeding out?

This coincides with a scene that is briefly shown in the official trailer for season six of Line of Duty which was released last month.

It begins with Kate shouting “armed police” before sirens are heard and police cars rush into the lorry park where a body is seen in the distance lying motionless on the floor – is this Kate after Ryan shot her and fled with DCI Joanne Davidson (Kelly Macdonald) in tow?

It seems unlikely as there is one scene viewers are yet to see play out on screen – when Kate and Jo are cornered and told to drop their weapons and put their hands up.

Towards the end of the trailer a helicopter can be heard trying to find someone or something and a car with two passengers eventually emerge.

Kate and Jo are seen walking either side of the vehicle with their hands held in the air as they are eventually surrounded by other armed police officers.

This clearly indicates Kate is not wounded by Ryan’s shot, so is the body lying motionless in the lorry park the OCG’s originally caddy?

After all, viewers saw how poor Ryan’s aim was when he tried to shoot Jo and pointed the gun metres above her head.

But would Kate really kill off a member of the OCG, instead of just injuring him and then attempting to retrieve vital information from him back in custody?

To add to this, the podcast, Obsessed With…Line of Duty spoke about how Kate is being manipulated by Jo – perhaps this be the reason why Kate fled with Jo from the scene where Ryan was shot dead.

Former Line of Duty star Craig Parkinson discussed the idea with comedian, Chris Washington and said: “Kate is still flying the flag for Jo, after all of this that she knows!”

“I know! And that could literally be the death of her couldn’t it?” Chris remarked and Craig added: “Well, that is the question on the nation’s lips – could this be the death of Kate?”

The comedian asked: “But why is that is? Is it a love thing?”

“Jo has proven herself to have a touch of humanity, I think she cares for Kate,” Craig said.

“Now, whether that is as a respected colleague, as a friend, as a potential lover, I don’t know but there is something in there and she knows that her only way out of her connections with the OCG, being controlled by this puppet master, whoever it is, is to off Fleming.”

Touching on the comment made actor who played Matthew ‘Dot’ Cottan about Kate’s relationship with Jo “being the death of her”, the actress who plays Kate spoke about her character potentially being killed off by writer Jed Mercurio.

During the same podcast episode, Craig commented: “I’ve been saying week in and week out that I’ve been so worried about certain characters – that we have grown to love over the years – and I’m terrified that one of the main trio is going to go.

“I have put my chips on poor old Steve, up until this week… And as we know as actors, nobody is safe.

“When you started reading the script, how did you feel, how did Vicky feel when you were turning the page?”

“Well listen, every episode of Line of Duty history is terrifying and Jed (Mercurio) is always there to serve the story – it is exactly what happened with Dot,” she explained.

“Dot’s time came when it was right to serve the story and that is what Jed will always do.

“I don’t want to put everything out there but Jed serves the story…”

Is she suggesting Kate will suffer the same fate as Dot and be killed in episode six or seven of series six?

Line of Duty airs Sunday night at 9pm on BBC One and Obsessed With… Line of Duty is available now on BBC Sounds.
