A suspect has been arrested in connection with the disappearance of Charlotte Sena.
The nine-year-old was found alive, allegedly in a cabinet in Craig N. Ross Jr.’s campervan – and he is now being held in Saratoga County jail in New York. He is being held without bail. The alleged kidnapper was pictured looking disheveled in a mugshot released Tuesday.
Police stormed the 46-year-old’s camper two days after Charlotte disappeared and he was arrested before being arraigned on a charge of first-degree kidnapping. He is described as around six foot four inches tall and weighing 275lbs.
Law enforcement connected Ross to the case after he allegedly finding a ransom note for Charlotte in her parents’ mailbox, according to New York Governor Kathy Hochul.
A fingerprint found on the note allegedly matched Ross’s fingerprints – which were on file following a drink driving arrest in 1999.
Hochul said: “He drove up to the family’s mailbox assuming they were not at home. [He] opens the mailbox, enters the ransom note, leaving a critical piece of information behind – the ransom note.”
The crucial piece of evidence eventually led police to an address where Ross Jr. was living, she said.
Charlotte was found in a cabinet in a campervan allegedly belonging to Ross Jr. Governor. Hochul said the girl knew she was being rescued when police arrived.
She disappeared on Saturday when she rode her bike alone in a wooded area at Moreau Lake State Park where her family was camping.
Her disappearance led to a massive search effort during which teams combed the 6,250-acre park and the surrounding area. Law enforcement also began investigating a possible abduction.
The park was temporarily closed and flight restrictions over the area were put in place. Governor Hochul described the “chaotic” scene as authorities and volunteers attempted to find Charlotte.
She said: “They called her name. People started searching, and people from other campgrounds joined.”
Police issued an Amber Alert for Charlotte on Sunday which has since been canceled. New York State Police said she is in “good health”.
